Found in most lochs even very brackish or saltwater environments. Stickleback fry are very translucent & silvery, and tend to shoal up, feeding on daphnia and similar. Adults are generally found in very shallow water, near stones or weed and big trout move into very shallow water to hunt them during late evening - early morning when it is safer to do so . Stickle back patterns an enigma- what looks good to us doesn’t always fool the trout and the perfect stickleback fly that fools all trout has yet to be invented. It’s common to catch trout stuffed with stickleback on a fly that is nothing like a stickleback which implies they are opportunist feeders. A year round food but particularly back end of season when the trout as they prepare for spawning can get very territorial and aggressive.
